Member associations: The German law system does not plan an of cial or normal relationship to governmental authorities. Our member associations and DVT itself have good relations to the relevant authorities and governmental authorities are consulting DVT and VDI (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure) in general engineering matters. VDE (Verband der Elektrotechnik Elektronik Informationstechnik) is another example of an important Association in Germany.

The year 2016 witnessed an initiative by the German engineering chambers (Ingenieurkammern) to bring about the revision of the 16 state engineering laws. The chambers justi ed their approach with the implementation of the revised “Directive on the recognition of profes- sional experience” (2013/55/EU). The process would have ultimately lead to different regulations concerning the right to bear the protected professional title “Ingenieur” in Germany. However, VDE and VDI, together with other engineering associations, were able to prevent this through well-coordinated lobbying work as well as constant infor- mation of and communication with political decision makers on the state level.
The year 2016 also saw a change in the leadership of DVT, the German national member organisation of FEANI. DVT, an umbrella organisation of 32 organi- sations from engineering and natural sciences, elected Dr.-Ing. Hans Heinz
Zimmer chairman of DVT. Dr. Zimmer is the former CEO of VDE, the German Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies. Dr. Zimmer will as chairman of DVT also automatically be the chair of the German National Committee of FEANI.
Additionally, on 1 July 2016 VDI The Association of German Engineers took over the head of ce of DVT. Dr. Thomas Kiefer, International Affairs Coordinator at VDI, took over the position of Secretary General of DVT. He will in the future have the opera-
tional responsibility for DVT and coordinate all FEANI activities on the national level.
